Criteria for “Rug Hooking Artist of the Year”

We welcome applications from any individual rug hooking artists.

The Hooked Rug Museum of North America (HRMNA) is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of rug hooking.  To ensure the continuity of this tradition, the HRMNA showcases contemporary work that reflects the evolution from a practical craft to a recognized fine art.  Advancing research into both the artistic and technical aspects of rug hooking remains a key priority. HRMNA is a federally registered charity run by a board of directors, staff and volunteers.

Receiving recognition as a “Rug Hooking Artist of the Year” by the HRMNA is a meaningful honour.  Each year, selected artists have their work exhibited at the Museum for the full season, May to October. Visitors to the museum come from all over the world to view the artifacts and the exhibits of the selected artists.

The following criteria is used in the selection of each year’s honouree(s):

1.   The “Rug Hooking Artist of the Year” must be willing to support and promote the Hooked Rug Museum of North America.

2.   Each "Rug Hooking Artist of the Year" curates their own exhibit, providing background information on all pieces chosen for exhibition.

3.  Each "Rug Hooking Artist of the Year" is responsible for the shipping and packaging costs of rugs to and from the Museum, and have personal insurance coverage for their rugs during transit and at the Museum.

4.  The "Incoming Exhibit Agreement" form must be signed by both parties (honouree and HRMNA representative);

5.   You must provide to HRMNA, via email, a portfolio of work proposed for exhibit for a five month period as well as a biography that will be reviewed by the Selection Committee (website may also be provided if applicable); and will be used to promote the artist and exhibit.

6.  Applications for "Rug Hooking Artist of the Year" must be submitted on the required electronic form to the Board of HRMNA before SEPTEMBER 1 of the current year i.e. applications for 2026 must be submitted by September 1, 2025). Decisions will be made by the Committee by year end for the following year's exhibit.
